It'll be important for the game's longevity (especially with two alignments to play through) that there are some new ideas mixed in. This is undoubtedly due to the success of its previous games, so the hesitation to fix something that ain't broken is obviously powerful. The developers have, it seems thus far, been unconcerned with the need to truly refresh the game with new ideas, preferring to instead stick to what they know: the dungeon slog. Explore lengthy dungeons, slaughter untold packs of enemies, grab the loot, teleport back to safety and unburden yourself, and fight bosses. Good or evil, the game does fall into the usual pattern. While it's hardly Fable, thanks to its lack of subtlety, it's nice to see a moral choice like this - and it should be entertaining to give both sides of the coin a whirl. Once you've explored the Plane of War for a bit, you'll meet a feisty lass who invites you to dump the chaste Firiona and shack up with her - well, actually, to defect to the evil side of the fence, become a servant of the God of Hate, and reap the rewards. Still, I also rose to the task with fresh aplomb, which suggests this cat has a few more lives left in him. Though there are nips and tucks in the treasure dropping, interface, and weaponry, this game will be d¿j¿ vu for anyone who's played a previous incarnation. Once my burly Vah Shir got there, I fell into a familiar rhythm of slicing open the faces of goblins and collecting booty with the square button. Instead of exploring Norrath, you'll be gallivanting around the elemental planes. It's not just a cool, spooky cave it sets the pattern for the game. She immediately sends you on your way to the Plane of War. While the original game plunked you down in Norrath, the world of EverQuest, and set you on your merry way (remember those damn annoying elves?) this time you're instantly recruited by the series' mascot hot elf chick Firiona Vie. Of course, all of the character classes from the original are back, and you can import your Champions of Norrath character and sally forth seamlessly, if you see fit. These giant cats are powerful warriors with enough cool spells to keep 'em interesting. Still, I prefer the Vah Shir Berserker, being a man who prefers to swing bladed weapons like a maniac. The Iksar Shaman has speedy recovery, which makes him a pleasant choice, and the spirits he summons can give your foes a seriously bad day. The first change you'll probably notice is the addition of two new race/class combos (you'll recall that that these are inextricably tied together in Norrath, and so it goes in Return to Arms as well). You can do it online or off, and as you'd expect by now, it as smooth and creamy as your favorite peanut butter. Major and minor kinks are being worked out, a fresh coat of paint has been applied, and the fundamental game is the same as it ever was: crawl dungeons, kill enemies, and loot the bejesus out of the chests and kegs. Champions: Return to Arms is this year's model. As its publisher Interplay began its descent into the depths, Sony Online Entertainment became ascendant and had the good sense to tap Dark Alliance developer, Snowblind Studios, for last year's Champions of Norrath. Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance was one of the finest action RPGs in the PS2's early days.
